#2Trailers no. 2, a #preview of upcoming films by Kev: Killer Elite & The Darkest Hour
Recently, I have noticed an odd, and slightly disturbing, trend. About a month in advance of a film coming out in theaters, TV is inundated by a peppering of short trailers designed to raise buzz about the upcoming flick. That dies down and, if the filmmakers are lucky, the waves are blasted once again the week of its premiere.
This seems to be creating an atmosphere of white noise, or our thresholds have been pushed too far, because, lately, more often than not, if I mention a trailer all I will get is a quizzical look, or, if I am lucky, a ‘oh yeah, that movie is coming out!?!....’
Almost no one seems to be following up to find out exactly what a movie is about, not even if they see a familiar actor like Daniel Craig, and I’d bet even money trailers are now tuned out like soap commercials.
Therefore, to combat this and to reach as many people as possible, I have decided this weekend to pick two trailers periodically and write a little something about the movies I want to see.
Sounds like fun right!
Killer Elite
First up we have a movie that, according to the trailer, is an assassin showdown film based on real events. Danny Bryce (Jason Statham)’s mentor Hunter (Robert De Niro) is captured by Spike (Clive Owen) and his cunning crew forcing Danny to parkour and kill his way through hosts of evil men.
Well, at least the three the synopsis says are sent after him by Spike.
Throw in the beautiful and talented Yvonne Strahovski as a possible love interest and, hopefully, badass assassin in her own right and we have the recipe for a great September movie and a great excuse to put all these actors together on screen.
Nice, possibly new, trend: Layering in 80’s metal bands like the Scorpions for a soundtrack instead of moody, down tuned horns punctuating cuts in the trailer!
The Darkest Hour
From the director of Wanted, Night Watch and Day Watch, Timur Bekmambetov, comes what is truly the first alien invasion film we have seen in a long time.
Why do I say this? Because, at least in appearance, these aliens are not anthropomorphic and it is possible they have motives that do not run parallel to ones we ourselves as a species might possess.
Bordering on SciFi Horror like the original Alien, I am excited to see this film and to the possible repercussions a successful movie like this will have across the world, other countries may start asking Americans tojust stay home because “bad things happen when you visit our country”.
Well there you go! Thumbs up, thumbs down, theater, DVD or have you given up and tuned out trailers, let me know!
