#2Trailers no. 7, John Carter of Mars and War Horse, a #preview of upcoming films by Kev

The theme for this weekend’s trailers was Disney movies, mainly because the pool I picked from appeared before the newest Disney film Real Steel. Someone at Disney got the memo because they seem to have kicked it up a notch and have went for more original movies than in the recent past.

This week my choices are John Carter and War Horse.

Based on the Edgar Rice Burroughs’ Barsoom franchise, this science fiction/sword and sorcery series by the creator of Tarzan has been adapted a few times, but this may be the most high profile attempt to date.

I’m not sure how close they will be sticking to the books, John Carter is what appears to be an immortal, from the trailer ‘check’, a Confederate officer, ‘check’, and chased into a cave in order to hide from Apaches, doubt the makers of Pocahontas will include this. Since the first story was published in 1911, most people have not read the book, so a word-for-word translation to film may not be as important as, say, an adaptation of Twilight.

This big budget adaptation of John Carter is being directed by Andrew Stanton who also directed WALL-E and Finding Nemo. From doing these write-ups, I have noticed a trend with Disney, giving animation directors of success live action movies.

Taylor Kitsch of Friday Night Lights fame is John Carter. I personally have not watched that show, but it does have a loyal following.

The music was composed by Michael Giacchino who wrote the music for Up and Super 8 as well as some episodes of Lost and a lot of Fringe.

Will this succeed? The general public and I will find out on March 9th, 2012 when it hits theaters.

War Horse is the next big Stephen Spielberg directed film to hit theaters. Adapted from a 1982 novel about a World War I horse drafted into the calvary by the British, Joey and his owner Albert, who is not old enough to enlist, seek to reunite across battlefields, both hostile and friendly.

Special effect and attention to detail-wise this appears to be on par with The Pacific and Band of Brothers.

John Williams has composed the score.

This appears to be another heart-warming moneymaking release from the big boys of film and it is slated for release on December 25th, 2011.
